I was so fascinated by these photos, to think my mom God rest her soul worked there for several years in the late 40's and early 50's some of stories she has told us over the years as we aged are so shocking. Would love to be able to tour this building.
I use to work at Mass Mental Health Center. It was A stat hospital, not especially luxuriant, but had a good, caring philosophy. Its
objective was help patients to get well, not to keep them.
I was a patient at a Connecticut state hospital in 1985.
I will never forget this week: Medicare was coming to the hospital to either certify or re-certify the hospital.
All of a sudden, our ward got attention--The floors were cleaned and waxed, plants appeared, new furniture arrived, and the patient bathrooms were cleaned (which was a good thing because a fellow patient would defecate in the sink, and it would usually stay there for a week. Another patient of the opposite sex would come out of the men's dorm each morning, and set up camp until bedtime in one of the women's bathroom stalls--with blankets, pillows, and all.)
So, this radiator photo reminds me of the pre-Medicare inspection cleanup--staff made patients clean up all of the cigarette butts that were piled up behind, and under the radiator.

I've loved shipwrecks for decades....as a SCUBA diver, I even got Wreck Diver certified just to visit some of the sunken ships. Something about them absolutely fascinates me...not sure what; maybe it the life they once contained in the people that was aboard and the life the ships once had - the pulsating engines, etc.
If you ever get the chance, you should check out the James River Reserve Fleet (ship grave yard about 45 minutes from me) in south east Virginia. It's slowly dwindling down as more and more ships are being scrapped. http://googlesightseei...river-reserve-fleet/
I've read that the Western State Hospital in VA is owned by developers now. I just found my GG GPA who in his last 6 weeks was taken there and died and buried there. Are the plot stones still there or has the developer destroyed them? I have my GG GPA's row/plot # and was hoping to visit him in May. : (
