I actually live in Brentwood and if you go by where the new plaza is,there they are just standing cold and subdued in time right next to a lively plaza.

It is saddening and every time my family drives in back of the city bank park around past the soccer/flag football fields,we past by it.And every time we pass by i swear i feel like time is going so slow and chills go up my spine.

The sad thing is my grandmother(who is not dead at all, thank god) used to work there,i asked her about it and she said just one sentence "it was frightening, and that practically summed up what the patients felt and what PSH was.yet i'm pretty astonished that right next to pilgrim state, lies another hospital for the crazed, which i believe is pretty much a recreation of PSH.

This such a pretty building though every time i walk by it,i feel how some many patients felt...depressed and subdued
SAD.

Went to nursing school there from 1966-1970. It really wasn't scary then, but I was only 17 years old and pretty fearless. A great education. I knew I never wanted to be a psych nurse because of my psych experiences while in school. (We went o other hospitals for much of our clinical training). A psychiatric diagnosis back then was pretty much a lock the door and throw away the key type of thing. So much wasn't understood. I really think they did the best they could with what was available.

I graduated in 1970 but spent most of my years in the class of 69. I was what they called a "Super Senior" and have my 40 year old son,Douglas, to prove it.

I used to hang out here with my friends all the time in late 70's early 80's. The power plant was closed long before that. We pulled on the chains once and dropped at least 100 yards of coal 50 feet to the floor. We used to push big cement blocks off the top to watch them crash. We also partied on the roof of Edgewood. Donovans patrol was the private security that used to patrol the place. We used to go just to get chased by them. We knew the grounds much better than they did. Tunnels from building to building. We would carry big tins of biscuts we found in the fallout shelters to the roof and throw them off.

Andrew: If you continue to vandalize these places, they will be torn down and those who would like the opportunity to explore them someday, won`t be able to do that.

Please show some respect. YOU may not understand why people love to go and photograph these places. But a lot of us do and would appreciate that such history be left as is.

I only wish we had places like these where I am. Sadly, we do not. I, personally want the chance to go someday.
I meant "mention" not "mentution' or what ever that was, so sorry!
Catherine, I'm no expert and sorry I only found your question today, but No, I would imagine that one could NOT just go in there and look around. Too much of a liability. And some of the posters above warned of police and security, not to mentuion ferral dog packs, gangsters and ghosts. I wouldn't go in on a bet.......(at least not uninvited and not with out taking T.A.P.S- The Atlantic Paranormal Society, Kibbles N' BIts and a stun-gun or 2 in tow with me!) G'day.
Does any one know Shary Harmon she went to Nursing School at Pilgrim
I had a friend named Shary Harmon who i lost contact with years ago, she went to Pilgrim State Nursing School back in the late 70's does any one know her? Also if this building is so dangerous why don't they tear it down, and build a new psych hospital, or revamp this one.

was there about 8 years ago in Phoenix House. Took the elevator down to the basement and when the door opened. I could not breathe, I went in anyway and every hair on my arms stood up I kept going and came upon an old mattress spring with ties on it, looked like old blood on the floor as well. Wasnt suppossed to be there so I never said anything. I remember running out like I was being chased by the devil himself. I explored alot and wish I had free domain of the place to explore it more. There were always rumors among the people there about it being haunted.
