The light you see in the vertical line of windows is from the sun setting to the west behind the building. Electric lights are arranged horizontally along each floor by ward room/hallway. Stairwells were also lighted, but that vertical line of lights does not follow a stairwell.

Correction: the hospital actually began to decrease patient population during the 1970s as "community" facilities were replacing the state hospitals. We all know how well that went; patients stopped taking medicine, walked away from the homes, many living on the streets of NYC. By the time Reagan took office in 1981, the patient population had already decreased tremendously.

Building 40 was used as a private daycare center during the 1980s. All patients were gone from Group II circa 1980. That mural was painted during the daycare times.

i think these old ships are totally amazing it makes you wonder what where the people going through and what it would be like to go on a ship like that it would be my dream to go aboard the titanic or even just be close and see it for myself

I was here this past weekend. They have gutted most of the patient buildings, but the main buildings are still intact. They are making it into condos, so get there while you can

I think it is possible, they have been forgotten. Otherwise, wouldnt it have been cleaned, or swept, items straightened, etc, I would if it was my family place, and I knew about it. Just like now when a person goes and picks the weeds around a headstone, puts in flowers maybe, brushes off the flat-level stones in the ground.....Obviously, no one has been there for quite sometime.

The square cutout in the box would have been a viewing window, would it not? I personally think I would be totally enamored and saddened by finding this and done what I could to tidy it up a bit. Would have tried to find the nameplate or small decoration that is missing from that other close-up pic. I also, like to think I would never touch the viewing portal, but then again, might be tempted since that is in essence what it was for, though by family. But in taking over just a little upkeep, even if temporary, I would sort of associate myself with that family and its history. I would be living at the historical society or library, town hall, etc trying to figure out the who's, what's, where's, and whatnots of that family line as far to the present as possible. I love history, archeology, and the like, so when I get drawn to something or someone, I sorta get cramped vision as to anything else, until the curiosity is fulfilled.
