That sort of looks like a vent leading to the next floor so that heat coming from the lower rooms could rise to the upper ones. idk.. just a guess. We used to have vents like that in our old house for that reason because there was no furnace upstairs. Except ours didnt latch like that... This is One of my favorite shots!
