I really enjoy riding my mountainbike throughout the old grounds. The views of the sound and of the surrounding area are amazing. They would be making a disastrous mistake if they develop this land. Long Island is far to built up already. There is not much open space remaining. This is a precious piece of property that should remain in the hands of NY State Parks Department in order for future generations to enjoy. It would continue to add to the quality of life of all Long Islanders if it were to remain in their hands.

The first thing I thought was GO-KART RACES! Prop all the big doors open, set up a course around the building. NO straw bales!

Maybe sometimes, I dunno, maybe not. Right now I'm not sure. Damned complicated questions.

The color green has a calming effect on people as compared to other colors. No doubt why it was chosen throughout this place. Makes me wonder if a an overload of green would have the opposite effect?

That machine on the ceiling descends to process the heads and extract the brains! Do NOT get anywhere under it!

Many of these places were publicly funded. If I had to guess, I'd say elected officials shut them down for budget cuts and quietly let them fade away. Employees are gone, expenditures stop, funds are shifted to the intended pockets, biohazard disposal fees are avoided, and the facility is then ignored. Later, after decay and blight take over, there is no public outrage when the "horrible eyesore" is then relayed to developers in phase 2 of the pocket-lining procedure. Their money did not equip these facilities, they have no reason to care.

The standard issue lobotomy room. Splatters of guts and blood all over are normal, messy body parts strewn about. Nice tile and big floor drains make for a quick and easy hose job between victims. Next!

@ Adria: Thanks for the feedback. I too would like to see these buildings saved & reused. They must have been impressive in 1964. Given the fact these photos were taken in 2005, I wonder what the state & status of this facility is today.

My fiancee works at a candy store and around halloween they were selling a liquid candy in bags like this.
