I worked there in the late 50’s for two years. On the wards where I was assigned, we did what we could to help the patients. It wasn’t an ideal place to be sick, but far better than today when we see them on the street as homeless.

Closing the hospitals and placing patients in group homes in neighborhoods sounds wonderful. However, would you like to have a group home as your neighbor? If so, you need to contact the Health Department and let them know.

Just thought I'd let people know that the Bryan Building, which took the place of the old state hospital on the grounds in the 1950s was recently condemned due to a crack in the foundation. Also, the clock tower was demolished a few months ago :(

I think that Thomas has a secret, deep, jealous envy of people who have experienced ghosts/spirits because he hasn't and probably never will and he knows that. This makes him somewhat angry on a sub-conscious level that he feels he needs to lash out when someone else mentions them.
The fact that he actually recognizes "the spirits" by calling them by name means that he does infact on some scale believe they do exist. Unfortunately, since he himself has/will never experience them means he will just continue on trying to rationalize as you've witnessed here.

The plumbing main trunk with feeders coming in and the heating ductwork give an eerie, organic quality to the space. You can see the internal "organs", making the whole place seem as a single organism.

Ornamentation was an integral part of the manufacturing process @ that time. Functional and decorative, the stars lighten the parts and save manufacturers on raw material. They simplify confinement by simplifying the manufacturing and assembly process. No bars and cross members to assemble. Less attachment points=less potential failure points. A creative solution to numerous issues inherent in manufacturing and confinement.

Water tower? This is a water tower? Looks like a normal tower to me. What a good job at concealing what is really is by the builders & Motts, love the infrared shot choice. It really makes the photo stand out.

BritanyB, they do restrain infants & children in hospitals for their own safety & protection, as they do not know any better. Think about it, if you are a baby or a young child, you are exploring the world around you & learning things daily. With that in mind, you do not know pulling out an I.V. or trying to climb out of your crib or bed could threaten your well-being or life.

I know the thought of such action is disheartening & uncomfortable, but it is needed sometimes & parents know that long term, no real damage is done. The babies & children forget it & move on with their lives, hopefully happy & healthy for years to come.

Saint Nick breaker is in the process of being dismantled.My grandfather worked Maple Hill coal mine for over 31 years which was the primary
source of coal for Saint Nick which was located right in back of the breaker were only one mine shaft still stands today.I just moved back to pa from NJ after 28 years and nothing has changed.My father was born in 1941 and tells me stories of it in its hey day.I am now 40 and remember it as a kid.I go back once a week to take pics as I live right outside of Sheppton.Here is location,it wont be around much longer 10-1-13. What a shot of the building, very imposing view. It would give me chills to be led up to this place if I was a patient here during the time it was open. It looks massive enough in photos, I can't imagine what it looks like in person. The infrared use here is stunning, great choice Motts.
