Your description does sound like a developmental center (it probably would have been called a "state school" or "training center" in those days). There were large institutions in Princeton, Woodbridge, Totowa, Woodbine and Vineland.

I was in the first grade in 1971, and had been labelled "hyperactive". Through some kind of state program,I was sent from my suburban NJ town to a school there. I think it was called " the Garden School". As I looked at some of the photos of the place, I got chills and a kind of visceral jolt in my gut, not sure why. I don't have a lot of memories of the place. I do remember a kind of sunroom, and a large lunch room. I remember uncommunicative kids sitting on the floor, rocking, and other kids who were easily angered. My parents, realizing that I didnt belong there, had to sue our school system to get me out. Seems like our school was getting money from the state to send kids there, and they didnt want to give up their source of income. I'm not sure about the details. Does anyone know anything about the school and what organization ran it? Any info would be appreciated. Email w246892@hotmail.com

The latest news from Chicago is reporting a group of people held a slow boy and were torturing and abusing him live on FB.
That is the kind of abuse I endured 24/7 at the Essex County Emergency Children's Shelter and in this hospital to which it was attached.

A paraphrasing of a paragraph from a 2005 essay by Elie Wiesel;

“During the period of the past century that I call Night, medicine was practiced by some in SOHO not to heal but to harm, not to fight off disability but to inflict it. In the conflict between Good and Evil during the third quarter of the 20th century in Belleville New Jersey at the Essex County Emergency Children’s Shelter the infamous duo of Aunt Dolly & Ms Janey, their minions along with the medical personnel of SOHO (the Shelter was in the original SOHO building) under her sway or desirous of her protection played a crucial role. They were the torturers and assassins in the science of organized cruelty that we called the child welfare system of Essex County New Jersey.”

flushed...it seems you come back to galleries like I do quite often. I was captivated by your writings on this page in particular and would love to hear more about your story(ies). If you want, write to me (my user id is my email address). Although I have no experiences in health care I have become fascinated with the history of it and learned a great deal thanks to Mr. Motts and this web site. When I was a teenager I took care of an ailing parent, and my sister spent most of her working career at a residence taking care of handicapped adults but other than that I have no first hand experience. Thanks very much.

Eldo, Most of the story is in this Quick Run Thread in the comments I have made. There was another thread or two that I participated in but after Motts changed the site I couldn't find them as I was depending on the recent comments function to find them I did not bother to remember what location they were.
It isn't really very fun for me to just bring this stuff up because someone is interested as it also drags up symptoms the events caused. If you have a question join the forum I use the same name.
Flushed, thanks for all the comments, you sound like a very interesting person. Email me if you want, I'd love to hear more about your experiences.
