it's my understanding (from talking with some folks who lived in this area for decades) that when the patients were released from this hospital and another one nearby that the patients were at a loss and wanted to return because they were institutionalized, sheltered, cared for (to various extents), and didn't know how to live outside. a lot became wandering homeless. i am certain many people had horrible experiences in these institutions--on the other hand they had a purpose and a lot of caregivers are the most amazing people i've ever met. all that said, these are incredible, fascinating, textural, moody photographs that i'm really grateful i can look at.
I have been in this exact room, the wheel chair as been moved since i was there but i remember the paintings on the wall, it was vert creppy, this place is totally fucked
I am in 100% agreement. I've already been cussed out by graffiti "artists" for my intolerant views of their work. Jmom, I hope you realize that the comment above yours was a sarcastic one, and if I could vocalize it, it would drip with venom!
They are demolishing the main building, called old main. They're just looking for the money to do it. I'm pretty sure the morgue will be demolished too.
No, they aren't for sale, it's a shame... they have been abated for asbestos and lie unmaintained - demolition by neglect. I don't know who currently owns the property, the buildings on the other side of the parkway have been sold for scrap, these might not have been included.
I just wanted to note that grafitti that is painted without regard on something that belongs to someone else OR to everyone... is just ugly. Not because the painter has no talent- but because the painter has no respect.
