Even more depressing than seeing the park empty is the plan to turn it into Luxury condos. It was and is such a part of the history of the city and the region. The sale of the property to the proposed developer is not yet closed - it is contingent upon the city granting approvals for the plan. I'm trying to gather some support for one last effort to pursuade the city to stop the condos from happening. I think many people in this state would love to see a small park, restaurant(s), a new palladium, even a small hotel and camping area there. There's room for a boardwalk, and tying the pier into our public transit's ferry system. There are 122 acres of land on that site, more than enough room for all of that and then some. In common with most places good and bad happened here. However, there are documented events regarding the ill treatment of patients, and this did happen. There were also a large number of experiments tried out on people as well.

Slightly further down from the bars on the same side is the Operating Theatre. It's particularly freaky, even though it's empty - but maybe that's because I know what sort of operations were undertaken there...

In the earlier years at Severalls patients were often bathed one after another in the same water - to save time. Most of the baths at Severalls are in the middle of rooms, to allow nurses to bathe or assist a patient. Some baths have a lifting device at the end of them to assist patients in/out. Interestingly, many bathrooms have locks on the outside, leaving patients with (understandably) no privacy at all.

The 'door' is not a door; it's a shutter. It could be left open during the day time to allow light in and closed at night. Alternatively it could be locked shut at any time if there was any thought that a patient may try and injure themselves. Or as punishment of course. (And no, you don't get these on all British windows.)

I worked at CK Post Addiction Treatment Center which is housed in one of the "smaller" buildings on the campus. The patients would go for healthwalks and sometimes they would be taken to the mourge or other buildings by alumni guides who knew the grounds very well. Security is lax but it is a possibility to get aressted for tresspassing.There is also a tunnel system built for easy navigation during the winter months. This was another route to the morgue for the patients on the walk. There was also an LIRR station just for Pilgiim. It is still there decaying. Working there especially at nights in seculed areas you could hear strange noises and feel a "presence". It was rather spooky. However , I became used to it and would "talk " to the "presence" which often quieted the noises.
