If I have read the comments from others correctly, this was a forensics unit. That would explain the use of this type of mesh doors. If you had ever had to work in a forensic mental health unit before medications were readily available, you would have been quite thankful for the strong wire mesh doors.

Barbara -- from a financial and logistical point of view, it was probably viable to do so, I imagine they'd be pretty easy to uninstal, and that a scrap metal dealer did all that themselves. Just my guess.

Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised that they remove the boilers? Mayme my cognisance of what the huge Titanic boilers looked like skew my train of reason...but I would imagine that would be quite a hefty, not to mention expensive, task to remove the boilers.

I am distressed to see so many comments by people interested in the use of a Utica crib for their loved ones. The Utica Crib was a device used in the 1800's to lock mental patients into their beds at night. It is outlawed now. If I was ever locked into bed at night the experience alone would drive me crazy. Get some window locks or door locks for your daughters room but DO NOT restrain her to her bed. What are you thinking?

I agree with Amy.....Looks to be a more long the lines of a cell. But then the hanging light still would not make much sense.
but it could have been installed later if they did change the use for the room
