I don't think that house was ever beautiful. Looks rather shabby and thrown together. That dormer is quite ugly and oddly cut. Yet it's fascinating to look at.

I love the cheerful tiling on the wall. Quite a contrast.

The connecting linkages from the gearbox to the two layer bellows were
modified chevy front end steering parts.
The cupped bearing halves, tension springs, and tapered ball joints were difficult to find until I found "chev's of the 40's.com. who knew what I was needing and repeatedly called me over the next two and a half years to update me on their progress of finding the three ball joints needed for my friend's lung.
Unexpected wold class service fo these days and times. kudos to Chev's!

All of the collars on the iron lungs so far have been the spiral type. were there no latex foam collars with the five leather straps that held them open?
Some patients, like my friend, would be choked by the plastic spiral collar before an effective seal could be achieved and could only use the foam ones, buffered by a diaper cloth to prevent chafing, sores, or even the foam from actually growing into the skin.
I mentioned under another picture that I'm modifying her "collar buster" to open and close a spiral unit. That one now has a new fleece fabric over an inner liner to get a good seal and be comfortable as well.

For some reason that link didn't work. Anyway, the whole site of the former Dixmont was completely covered by a massive landslide a few weeks ago. For any of you who may believe the place was haunted, this may be some fuel for thought. Just search "dixmont" and "landslide" for more info. creeeepy...

Thank you for the link to the Crudelle article. It appears sacreddarkness.com is no longer, and I have had trouble finding more than tiny tidbits regarding his work. Do you have any more sites or links that will lead me to information on his work, hopefully with pics. Thank you in advance.

Could you tell me what that image is in the dark? It looks like a head partially wrapped head in bandage with one eye open and looking at the camera?

Farmer's Lung!!!

Yup, can you believe our theatre is still using those now? I mean, it's a new theatre, but we have 4 of those beauties, and use them daily. They're a million times more finicky than the digital progectors, but a billion times cooler, so it evens out.
