It's a 40SX-8 inline 8 cylinder Atlas Imperial diesel. It has an Elliott turbocharger. These were low speed diesels probably about 1200 HP at 650 RPM. It looks to be about '50's vintage. These were used in generators mostly and Atlas Imperial Corp. from Oaklnd, CA. was bought out in 1951 by White-Superior Corp. which is probably who built this beauty. I have one complete with radiator skid mounted ex-NASA unit for sale. 207-576-1464.

Boy, Motts you sure have your fan club, so I'm going to jab a little fun here, b/c aside from the total "I wanna marry you and have your babies" types comments, everyone loves flattery.. If the man didn't KNOW he was good looking he wouldn't post his mug. Yes, we all know he is. But more attractive Motts, is your talent. I started in the arts myself and find your skills even more appealing than your looks & applaud you highly for them. Not only thatm but the research and time you put into your excursions; very commendable.
You lucked out, you've corned the market on both looks and ability so when you're like me, 35 and over the hill you can rest on the laurels of your amazing talent. If I didn't think I was somewhat older than you, i could swear i do know you though - can I pry and ask - Are you a NYer? And did you go to NYU in '90-93/ If you don't mind answering, or havent posted that already . Keep it up. I meant all this in the best of spirit

Brooklyn, I thnk the arrows mya be unrelated, I could be totally wrong, but maybe were randomly trown over the paintings by maintanance/demolishion/restoration type crews as a careless means of 'direction finding', pointing the ways to exits or something - just a thought. I don't think the arrows have anything to do with the timeframe of when the pictures were made, personally.

the morgue is located in the basement of building 23. bldg 23 was the med-surg bldg, the clinics, OR and recovery room. we students learned alot of basic nursing in these bldg's. i remember having to go down there to bring a body to the morgue or to go to the oxygen supply room to bring up the large oxygen tanks that were used for the pt's up on the 4th floor ICU. you were never allowed to roam the halls alone as a patient may be wandering about. there were several girls in my class that got beat up by pt's and then left, but i stayed as i loved the whole place and was intregued. i lived on campus as i came from upstate and learned and saw alot. it is such a special place.
and by the way the cemetary is that empty field just off the south service road of the LIE, you won't find any head stones but only stone plagues with numbers on them. you would have to go to administration bldg and match the number with a name in a log or registry book. this was the only way to identify the person in the cemetary. of course we students use to go out there to party at nite. but we never desicrated or stepped on the stones.

i went to PSH from 1971 to 1974 for nursing school and it was the best 3 years of my life. you had to live there to feel the specialness of the place. i cry every time i go through the hospital grounds because it is horrible to see what time and progress has done to such a special place. i could ramble on but i don't want to bore anyone. but if anyone wants info about it you can email me at lindad51@ optonline.net. great memories!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up in the boro, the graveyards for these guys were right down the street. one night my friends and I got inside, and one of my friends went ahead and crept into one of the...trays...we ran out screaming. also thought we heard some things rustling around. as mentioned before, the security sux.

that building is actually in use still. i was kicked out because these guys were working there. they were doing some type of work in there.
very odd. and i've been yelled at a few times from being near there.
lucky you got in.

a lot of homeless people live in there. i went there and they tryed to make us go away by sticking a radio out the window and blasting it so we wouldent come inside. oh well

its a very green place
