I have walked these ruins during my visit to Heidelberg, but being 12 at the time did not realize their significance. Lovely pictures, and thanks for giving me some history behind this place I remember. I love abandoned places (thus how I found your site).

Is this the stairway that leads to the clock tower itself? I wonder if anyone has ever been up there all the way to the top and can describe what it's like up there? I know the clock is a Seth Thomas, and there's also an 800 pound bell as well, which they used to ring every half hour to signal the time to those working in the fields surrounding the asylum, and so they would know when to come in for meals. I'll bet it's extremely hot, dusty, and possibly unstable up top. Not to mention dangerous and dark, with many ledges and dark corners.

It amazes me how one photograph can bring forth such emotion -

they really got discarded? the records? ugh that is soooo stupid like a comment i read above the records of people related should get the records if they don't want them make an exhibit on it lots of people would love to read/see what happened to these people and what happened in the asylums. i would like to go visit one but most have been demolished.

The museum I work for collected a c. 1962 Picker Galaxy G 500-S x-ray unit, and I'm trying to obtain technical info., manuals, etc. hbajdik@technomuses.ca

I totally agree.....for me, finding this site has not only lead me to some out of this world photos by Motts, it has satisfied my fascination of abandoned buildings, given me intelligent insight into asylums and history of pysciatric institutions and finally, made me feel like I am amongst friends.....I love reading cmments just as much as staring in awe at the photos. I hope everyone continues to comment, and people who dont wanna read, just DONT. Simple! best wishes to all

I went to the bennet school for girls. After trying to find it for an hour and a half, I finally found it. I was so fascinated by this building. And now I am compelled to walk these grounds. I need to know how these people got such good pictures! I would love to get pictures. I'm way too obsessed with this building.

That chair actually looks quite comfortable (if it wasn't so dirty).
