I think Motts does a great service by providing this website with his photos and allowing us to comment. I like the Gaebler photos because the most former patients comment on them. I don't like having a mental health professional say what the experience of being in seclusion is like. I would rather hear it from people who experienced it...I would like to hear them say how it feels to drag someone into seclusion. They might know about that lol.
Can you please tell me exactly where the location of the abandoned buildings was. Reference was made to a shopping mall now occupying the area, but what mall would this be. Are any original buildings left that may have been assigned to other institutions.
Former Resident, that's funny they told you girls to stay away from Timothy Leary's house! Indeed, no place for a proper young lady, he had the real halcyon hall!
Marcy, In the old days there were few community supports for mentally retarded children. Thus, families did not get the moral or financial resources they needed to take care of a child with special needs. In fact, there was a social stigma attached to having a retarded child in the family, as if the parents were at fault. Parents were encouraged to hand the baby over to the state and forget about it. Many did. What Brittany said about promiscuous girls being institutionalized did happen owing again to social shame and primitive regard for human sexuality. Rosemary Kennedy (JFK's sister) is a famous case of a person mild LD and behavioral problems being institutionalized, lobotomized, and rendered utterly dysfunctional. I have compassion because I had LD and behavioral issues as a kid and, under different circumstances, would have been institutionalized.
I saw the LWV Ghost Hunters episode and thought it was sensationalized hogwash. If you psych yourself with horror stories before you visit a site, you are going to confirm your prejudice. Maybe there are ghosts at LWV, but I doubt the kids from Ghost Hunters would know how to communicate with them. Ghost Hunters had to beef up there findings with sill cartoons of apparitions with glowing eyes and dead voices coming through the car radio. Anybody who buys into that should just stay home and read HP Lovecraft!
You don't find Zombies in libraries, you know they don't like to read! I on the other hand would have wanted to get inside only to see if any books were being left there to rot. If there were, what a shame.
