Another use for MG sets in an old plant was making DC power for the bridge cranes, as well as for charging the station battery banks. Any power plant had a large bank of glass-cased lead-acid storage batteries. These made DC power to work protective relaying and operate large circuit breakers when the generators were off the line. 120 volts or 208 volt DC for these purposes was common in the power plants.

What is seen is thousands of tubes thru which the circulating water passes to cool/condense the steam. There will be thousnads of small-diameter tubes rolled into that sheet to provide a passage for the circulating water. The bolts sticking out of the sheet are staybolts to secure the waterbox to the sheet and end flange of the condenser shell.

exciters make DC current to magnetize the field of the AC generator. What you are seeing is the commutator and brushes of the exciter. 3 phase = AC current. Exciter produces DC current, so no phases.

Commutator is a series of copper bars (gone greenish with corrosion in photo) that are on the end of the exciter armature. Brushes are carbon blocks that pick up current from the commutator bars while the armature is turning.

Bottom of the conser is called the hotwell, condensate pumps should sit a bit below the level of the hotwell.

These turbines and generators are VERY little guys by standards of even 40 years ago.

I erected enough steam turbines and worked in power plants, so this is stuff I 've known in my sleep for the past 40-odd years.
...this is a burn-off element...some-times they'd burn w/a green-blue flame...others these burnt w/a brilliant yellow...depending upon how much the blast-furnaces were consuming...night-time was always a spectacle when these ovens were at peak...especially under cloudy and/or foggy conditions...

ok, a little late answer... :) Well, first of all, the structure is not typically Roman, the Greek as well as other ancient cultures very early found out about the advantages of that design when it comes to visibility and audibility. Second, Germanic tribes were not that "rag-tag" as often imagined at all. They had a strong liking for colorful and ornamental jewelry. And calling them "warring" doesn't do them justice at all. The Romans for example were much more into warmongering as the history shows.

German history classes begin with stone age and end with the 1990s. An unproportionally big part of course covers the time from 1933 to 1945. That darkest of all times is depicted in detail and not leaving out the atrocities done by Germans. The goal is to clarify not glorify what happened then and why. To prevent anything similar happening again.

He did it up there and it was kinda fun being in this huge arena at night, having some beers and eating what everybody had brought along. At some point the police arrived, but didn't interfere. They just watched and quietly left. It turned out that guy had birthday the very same day as the "Führer", April 20th. I guess the police saw it was no "Führer's birthday celebration", but just some more or less alternatively looking students. :)

...I have always had this fascination of taking a chimney of such height and robustness...reinforcing 'er w/I-beams thru' the wall and welded to exterior steel-bands encircling the chimney at various points up the structure...to distribute load properly...then construct floors throughout w/varying ceiling heights...balconies...outrageous circular staircases...inside and out...(w/appropriate wrought-iron cage-work) and, using the top as a chest-level circular wall...topping her w/a 'roof'-Jacuzzi, Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope...and of course...a well stocked bar...plus, escape parachutes...though the place should be well above the maximum code-level for fire protection...I may need the engine-powered one to escape my creditors for such the outlandish yet, absolutely cool abode...
