I was an inmate at SCC in 1994 an this looks like the segregation cells under the main building on the hill since most of the institution was dorms and yes it was very haunted. I was in the seg cells once for fighting.

If they do and no one is around to hear it, do they even make a sound?

@Mike - It would make sense to remove these items when the building is closed, however in addition to not really being in the state's interest, it would certainly devalue the structure and make it less appealing to be re-purposed. The removal of some valuable elements can also reduce the building's integrity rather quickly (copper trim, slate shingles, etc).

@nvsoon - Yeah many buildings I've seen of this age had ornamental cast iron grilles over the vents, and they would certainly be installed here for safety reasons. I imagine they were stolen or salvaged.
Yeah - cramped is correct - poor servants; those ARE difficult stairs, and they only got a banister - no handrail. But they have a window: good.
Just C L E V E R! Two handrails, one on eah side +a window; they always did this, back in the days.
Good picture & the symmetry part is nice - but difficult to furnish methinks.

Another wonderful bed in this house---I keep wondering, when looking through various albums of abandoned places, why no one who ends up owning places like this rescues some of the wonderful pieces of furniture I see left in them? Anyone have any ideas? It seems so crazy to let wonderful furniture like this go to waste!
Thank you for the beautiful pictures of my childhood parish. I attended church and school at Transfiguration until grade six when my family moved to NY. I have many fond memories of 9:00 o'clock mass in the lower church and special occasions in the upper church.
YES! And suddenly undestood W H Y love ex. "Verden" so dearly - from the outside looks dark, formal, grey, harsh, strict, somber, square and ... and then Inside there is bright LIGHT + rounded, soft, but with some brilliant hues, shades & tints, friendly, full of great air and wide space, and with so many windows, with very good windowsills. This place! GONE!
Water water water everywhere - and YET; three windows in this small room. That IS good. It is gloomy light.
Wide open spaces - it is amazing how they built before....
Yes, Cronnur, did notice + faucets last, and I think they are beautiful. And until 2016 we still had one cute tiny washbasin left, in one small toilet, with a set-up like this, from 1937. We liked it, and were used to it...but my grandkids were NOT - and kept scalding themselves - not knowing how to mix the water well, hahahaha.
