I asked my old friend Motts back in 1965 when he'd get a set of this place up. I guess he wanted it to age a little more. haha. The old Kirk was a dandy in her day, inside and out. Great research and splendid old photos.
I have too many words and thoughts to express. The previous people did great and I sincerely share my sadness. Of all the smaller Kirkbrides, TSH was by far the most eloquent and richly detailed. Having closed in the early 70's, it remained closest to its roots inside and out . The grand dames of Kirks (Columbus, Pontiac, Worcester, etc.) have lost their favorite little sister.
Truly remarkable photos, Motts! Too many to comment on. Love the theater and gym but this last one gets the gold medal. You've been here a few times, right? Didn't you get spotlighted by the cop copter here? Don't answer that. I'm sure that case is still pending. The canoe--I assume you ditched it in the growth?
I love this kind of stuff as opposed to the writings on the walls. Anyone at anytime could have written all that. It's nice to believe it's authentic to a time frame but more than likely it's not. These cans on the other hand whisper out "I've been here since the last human hands put me here. Ain't I cool?!?"
I wonder what was the first. We sure know there were many miles of film spun.
Wow! This is one of those 'you really have to have been there' shots.
Nice shot, Motts! Would have been perfect but you had to go and tag it. ha ha ha ha ha
The "other" artist here amazingly restrained him/herself.
Right o, Hobo Shane, Right o!
Lynne,
You've created a monster... All I can think of is Col. Kurtz' last words...
That was enlightening.
The truth hurts.
Sounds exciting!
HOW COOL IS THAT!
Well said Surly Girl. My sister was in various state institutions (west coast) from '76 to '86. I visited her many times in that period and remember her various surroundings very well. Looking back, I can say the care was exceptional. In those years my sister was ages 13 to 23 and was far better off inside the bin than outside. She's been out and living on disability for more than twenty years now and seems to be managing well. From the first day I went and met staff, management, docs, (I was about ten years old), I have had the utmost respect and admiration for these in-
credible people. Surly Girl, I sincerely share your wonder (and anyone else's) of what it was like back in the day. How appropriate the good doctor popped in here :-)
