Thank you Mr. Motts. This is awesome! Brings back a memory of going here as a child with my Mom. I remember thinking it was a castle! Downtown Detroit was spectacular back in the day. Especially around the Christmas Holidays. It was a big deal to go to Hudson's Downtown to see Santa and all of the decorations. Hopefully some of these old buildings can be restored to their original glory!
The workmanship on the banister is incredible! Looks like marble?
Hopefully some of this was salvaged before the building was demolished.
Such a shame if not :(
Are those some sort of alarm bells on the right wall in front of the door?
There also seems to be a push-button box below them, all attached thru an electrical conduit. Fire alarms? Panic buttons maybe?????
It seems a terrible shame for someone not to salvage those pillars and the plaster-work above them. That kind of craftsmanship is truly a thing of the past. I would love to have them!
My heart breaks for this poor woman that seemed to want nothing more than to be independent from her family after she completed her college education. I had to know more. A lot of the links above are no longer active but I found a couple of articles that gave a more complete picture of the horrors of this poor girls life. http://www.kirkbridebu...pic.php?f=18&p=10009 http://sometimes-inter...-of-gennie-pilarski/
Welcome back to the "D" Mr. Motts!
I'm a fairly recent fan and love your work.
There are so many old decaying building here it's nice to see them being
photographed before they are forever changed or destroyed.
I love the mottled light and colours in this set. Thank you Motts for one of your most poignant and beautifully sad galleries yet. It's a shame that such a gorgeous piece of architecture had to be left to rot away. Looking first at the "old" photos you posted and then seeing these made this an unforgettable trip!
