Hello, Yes, I'm guilty! I tried to right click and save this picture. My Grandmother's sister sadly spent over 50 years of her life at Central Islip and maybe one other facility before taking up residence there. I remember going to CI with my mother and grandmother to visit the woman I knew and remember as "Babe". It was in the mid-late 1960's we visited with her. I remember a visiting room but can't seem to locate that in any of your pictures. My Grand Aunt passed away before Central Islip closed in 1996. Sadly, if she were alive today--she would have received medication for what is more commonly known today as depression and would not have spent almost her entire life in mental institutions. Thank you for the history and pictures, and sorry for right clicking!

Thanks for the update Charlie! Always sad to see historic buildings fall, but at least the iconic Sunburst Building has been spared.

These photographs are both beautiful and haunting, my compliments to the photographer. You have captured something that will never be seen again. I work nearby in Central Islip and can tell you that as of this message (June 2019) a massive building project is underway. The entire Sunburst complex is being renovated for what I believe will be office space. When I saw the construction fencing going up, I thought demolition for sure. But, following that, the interiors were gutted, the slate rooftops were fixed, and new windows were installed. Several adjoining multi story former hospital buildings are also being renovated, while others were demolished to make way for a condo complex.

This is an image that haunts me somewhat, since my Mother often talk about peering out of the windows there in the '60s.

I believe the 2 squares on the sides of the doorway are vents for air. I think there is a third, smaller one behind the upper section of the ladder.

Sorry, but that is not a light bulb. It is, in fact, a soap dispenser.
