Oh! Gag a maggot!!! YUCK! I think I'd go most anywhere but here! : ((
This looks like where they must have kept some of the really BAD boys!
Wowee! Awesome photo, Motts!
My Godmother had a vintage clawfoot tub like that! I was Blessed in that I actually got to soak in it a few times! : )

Cool prison.
I remember riding my bike past this entrance many times. I would look up and see the prisoners yelling from the windows, sometimes I'd take a message to the neighborhood older girls or their mothers for them. There were many prisoners in that building that also were from the same neighborhood. I was only ten years old. Thanks for all the great pictures.
Love the light trail. Makes me wonder what kind of energy has been left there. I hope it's good energy from a prisoner being released. Thanks for all the great pictures.

The plumbing main trunk with feeders coming in and the heating ductwork give an eerie, organic quality to the space. You can see the internal "organs", making the whole place seem as a single organism.

Ornamentation was an integral part of the manufacturing process @ that time. Functional and decorative, the stars lighten the parts and save manufacturers on raw material. They simplify confinement by simplifying the manufacturing and assembly process. No bars and cross members to assemble. Less attachment points=less potential failure points. A creative solution to numerous issues inherent in manufacturing and confinement.
Re: cruelty. IMHO, it's a matter of perception.

I have a ton of memories about Manteno. I was committed at the age of fifteen. The diagnosis, 'hebephrenic schyzophrenic'. What does that mean. It means I laughed a lot.
I need some one who can point me to banker's boxes of data on this place, for I am now 67 and plan to write that fifteenth and sixteenth year of my life. I need someone who can help me find families of my doctors.
It is important that you know, that for the fifteen year old girl who was committed there, she found safety and was kept alive. I do not intent to write a tragic story of a teenager stuck in a hell hole, but a tribute to
Ghost tentacle..

I have a video from a while back when I was around 17 years old. A few friends and I snuck in with a video camera at around 3:00 in the morning. Spooky place!
Nope - that is not a pretty entrance at all. Nothing is pretty about it! And never was, am sure. Not even the door! Picture is good. That´s different.
