I was there as a patients in the 50's and it was not a very nice place to be !! I saw plenty of abuse and straight jackets!! They were keep in the attendents office or the dispenserey next to the medication windoe on A-21 the I belive east end of a building. Call me if you want sime of the real truths about that place. Wayne 951-845-7452 I'll be glad to discuse it with you all , My story may be a bit different than you belive it was like.
The fencing on the stairs was added sometime in the early '70's after a series of patients "falling" over the hand rails...some where pushed over by other patients.
I remember going to the basement and it being black down there and all we could see was a light under a door when we got close it made a bang and we ran up the stairs and the cage door to the basement was jammed shut
Hey Kim and Brelinka!!,
I was also in yorkwoods in 89. I have tried contacting others from this albums comment section who where at yorkwoods. I have been swimming in the pool and I remember taking a bus to school. Being that I had to take the bus could you tell me which one I was in North or South? Its been great reading others comments that were also there, i have been combing this albums comments for info that would trigger my memory. My email is chrisrizz@ymail.com I would love to talk more.
Brelinka I was there from the time I was 13-15 as well. I can remember having to walk the mail from the south to north building. Your description is dead on of our day rooms. I remember we had some pretty cool staff members unless you pissed them off then they would send me to the quiet room or even worse 4 point restraints. I hated that place!
This has brought back SO many memories for me. I worked at this State Hospital in the 70's and 80's. It was a wonderful place to work with alot of wonderful people. I loved the patients and still feel so sorry for those poor souls that literally lost the only home they knew when they closed in 1991. I had patients that had been born and raised there. They were children of patients and were doomed from birth. The hospital was acutally a little city within itself. All the employees were close and supportive of one-another and very patient oriented and friendly despite what some might have thought. I only wish I could have gotten inside there one more time before they demolished it. I still work with some others that worked there...now working in the Ann Arbor area. We share fun stories of YSH frequently. Our dear friend "Mickie" who is no longer with us was probably THE most dedicated employee there, in her own way...LOL...and I'm sure many remember this "Mickie" of whom I speak...with very fond and loving memories...may she rest in peace.
This was the passage way between B and C buildings. It was the hall we took the patients to when we tranported them to the HUGE dining hall. Very institutional even for it's time when I was there...during the 70's and 80's. Lots of visiting in that dining room both between patients AND staff. I think alot of dates were made there both by patients AND staff. Anyone reading this remember "bush therapy"?...LOL
I worked there in the 70's and 80's...best job I ever had btw. These photos bring back many good memories, but on the other hand very sad to see the ruins. Still makes me all nostalgic when I drive by there and see the place where the buildings stood and the golf course once was. Working there was like working with a huge family...then all gathered at the Club 23 after work. Hope some past friends from there read this post/
There were 2 "juvenile" sections of Ypsi. Both were considered York Woods Center. I believe one was North and the other South. North was in the newer building (with the pool) and South was located off the lobby of the main building (the old building). I know this because I lived there from 1987-1989 (age 13-15). We had therapy visits and school classrooms on the second floor and I actually had a job of delivering newspapers to the teachers every morning. I can remember taking the tunnels to nearly everything (dentist, gyno, gymnasium). The stairs that led to the tunnels always creeped me out...I always thought some "sex-crazed loon" was gonna jump out from under them and snatch me lol! I remember we had 2 day-rooms with an office in between them that the staff would sit and observe us from. There were 2 seclusion rooms directly across from the office, as well. Our meals were brought up from the tunnels via the elevator. I always looked forward to it. It was the only thing that seperated the long days. Wow, lots of memories....good and bad... but I suppose thats not so crazy considering I was a teenage girl locked up in an insane asylum!
Was security flying in a helicopter, as the moon in the background looks like a search light mounted under a helicopter doing a sweep of the place as it flies over.
This is an awesome shot of the place & I agree, the moon in the background really makes this shot even nicer.
