The patients maintained the golf course, as well as played on it. I believe the patients were paid for their work, and they had their own bank on the premises. The patients also did housekeeping as a paid job, and worked in the stores from which patients bought items with the money they earned from working in this small "city". It is truly a shame that this self-contained city that provided as normal a social life as possible for these people was shut down instead of being used as a model for other facilities for the mentally ill.
This reminds me of Silent Hill 4

The two-tone effect is likely the result of the metal inside the concrete being near or at the surface of the point. This would be similar to what happens on the north side of a roof below the vent pipes. The residue from the metal flowing down kills the fungus that causes the black stains. Zinc is particularly efficient at doing this and keeping a shingle roof from turning black.

I think Ellen is relatively safe from any bad luck at this point. She can take her chances without much worry.

Pagasus64, Ms. Bland was driving down the street when a patrol car passed her going the other way. The patrol car flipped a u turn asap and sped up, She didn't know it at the time but the patrolman was coming after her. She saw him coming up fast and assumed he was on a call and moved over so he could go by. The patrolman pulled behind her and hit his lights. On the dashboard video of the stop the Patrolman clearly stated he pulled her over for changing lanes without signaling. She then explains that she was moving over because he had come up behind her so fast and he escalated the situation from there.
That is a classic DWB pullover.

Giant machines are always awesome! Thanks! A very famous and excellent book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, 1906, is one I cannot recommend more. Sinclair worked in the meat packing plants in the Chicago Union Stockyards to collect information. He outlines the grueling working conditions and the actions of the robber barons like Armour. Find the unabridged version if possible. It's unforgettable.
