In the mid to late 80's I was in Dejarnette for two terms, one for a little over a year and the other for 11 months. During this time I was on both adolescent wards, DJ1 and DJ2. This place was the stereotypical mental hospital inside and outside. The units had about eight rooms on both sides, it was separated in the middle by the staff station, day room and bathrooms. The boys on one side of the hall girls on the other. There was one room that was converted to a time out room. Just a gym mat on the floor.
The solariums on the upper two floors were used for the adolescent smoking areas. The lowest level of the building was for the children 12 and younger, hence the crazy murals on the walls. It was painted the "calming" color of sea green when I was there. The rooms were fairly large, with one to a room. Huge windows were covered in steel mesh that had a lock.
The DJ1 and DJ2 units are almost identical. Now as an adult, I would love to return to visit the hospital to take photos of this historical structure. Its an breathtakingly beautiful place that holds a lot of unusual history.

This, in fact, is a paper tape dispenser. A pull of the crank dispensed paper which contained an adhesive which was activated with water applied as it left the front of the device. Then this paper tape was used to seal a package (box, carton, etc.). The length of tape was set at the side of the machine, and the glass bottle provided the water for the moistener.

This old building has Big Soul showing.
We love it so much and are puzzled; we contemplate, ponder + wonder. Such a riddle all has gone so wrong.
