And I really hate people who somehow think they've been given divine authority to decide who is or isn't an artist, and that anything they don't find aesthetically pleasing isn't art. Thinking you can put such concrete boundaries around what an artist is, is really just ignorance.

That mural was done by an ARTIST local to Portland and Heidelberg, he graduated not too long ago from a prestigious art school undefinedI love saying that, since I go there now). He uses his graffiti talent to organize workshops for kids at the local schools and community centers.

That's kind of funny...sounds to me like he's an ARTIST and he's standing up for what he believes in.

I have a feeling it was a smoke stack for an old boiler system. They demolished one just like it where I work a few years ago.

that is by far the ugliest graffiti I've ever seen.

I really hate certain graffiti "artists". see, my friend graffitis stuff all the time and he's always saying it's because he's standing up for what he believes, so I'm always saying ok whatever it's not the graffiti that bothers me its the location. graffiti on walls never really bothers me but when its in places that are already covered by art or that portray something like this, something like childhood innocence, then I want to watch the person who did it choke and die on their own ignorance. if you're gonna tag or graffiti or whatever, do it someplace where you arent ruining childhood memories, art, or something of significance, for god's sake.

what the hell is with kids and grafetti? Did they not learn not to write on the walls when they were tots?

It's amazing to see people appreciate this place that are not from here. Too bad you didn't stick around till night. On a clear night, cinch your self to the edge of the dish on your stomach and look over the side... Amazing views of D.C. and Alexandria and the surrounding countryside....
