I agree with you, Karch. This is the difference between America and Europe. They have old buildings because they continue to renovate them. America...Just tear them down and build a stinking Wal-Mart. How pathetic.

Poor Emmett! After doing all of that cleaning, it must be odd to see it so dirty. I love old buildings like this and it's sad to see them deteriorate. I wish there were some way to save them!

Seeing a lot of the other comments with people who have seen their old childhood haunts more or less crumble, I've got a similar story. I haven't made it back to George AFB in California--a victim of the first round of BRAC closures after the First Gulf War--but my mom's been there and I've seen it at one-meter resolution with Google Earth. Apparently the US Army is using old base housing as an urban warfare training ground (according to some Discovery show I saw recently) and the dead grass is visible from orbit.

I understand the feeling connected to places like this falling apart, but in the desert it's an entirely different animal. According to my mom it's more preserved, oddly enough--no water damage to speak of--so you only get natural erosion from the occasional sandstorm and falling trees and the like.

Very cool, watch your step. This reminds me of the fire escape at the old Kansas Ciy General Hospital. It was the only way I knew to get in, spooky. Great Shot, excellent site, new fan. Got to work all weekend to makeup for lost time. It is worth it though!

Maybe they were written at different times. They are obviously the same handwriting, but considering there were other messages, maybe "Enjoy Your Summer, Take Care" was written at one point (it is all the same size and written on the same slant), and then the author added the message "Goodbye, and don't speak to me, leave me alone, I want to go home" another time. The writing is smaller and on a different angle.

I know that this is a dead thread, but this photo just kills me with irony. That's some shelter to be guided to! (Especially since the wall and painted shelter sign look in such good condition, juxtaposed with the peeling-apart room) Not your typical shot, Motts, but I like it a lot!
