Yes, it is a very haunting picture for me. It reminds me of summer for some strange reason. I can imagine being in that room alone with absolute silence and feeling depressed. Beautiful picture by the way.

Those are steam pipes. Greenhouses often used steam heat below the benches because "bottom heat" was helpfull in getting seedlings to germinate. Heat also rises
