My guess is that Satanists weren't involved at all - they are not that stupid or public or, ironically in most cases, that cruel. The much greater likelihood is that some bored asshat teenagers got together and tried to be cool and tortured some innocent animals because they weren't as smart as the animals and were a tad envious.
