Yes this was a very scary place. When I was about 10 (about 1964) the dance school I went to went to the Dever State Hospital and performed for the children. I was very very sad, they were not taken care of at all and at that time the children were consider retarded, but as I look back most of them had Down's Syndrome I can still remember their faces and hands reaching out to us. Very sad.
Your photography is absolutely amazing. I've been on the wrong end of the "scare the hell out of your date" phenom. that goes on on long island, & because Im a hopefull psychologist this place scares me most. Just knowing what went on inside these walls... You've done an amazing job of capturing this place
those were designed to only be opened from the outside so in case a disaster happened that causes the dead to become zombies, they wouldn't be able to escape
i used to live in this town...my sister and brother went to school around the corner and i went to Saline High..we would always joke that it was really stupid to put a school next to so many prisons. There is a new mental institute at the corner and then a big prison on the other side of the street. THis was amazing to see, i could only see it from the road and the field on the one side when i played soccer there as a child. thanks a lot! so cool
the building should be renovated and turned into a hotel or apartments. It would be a tragdety to domilish them. Ive seen buildings in very poor condition renovated before its definely worth fixing this building.
there should have been a care taker hired keeping maintence up on these buildings so they would not be in the condition they are in know. plus a caretaker would have guarded the buildings from vandals.
