Yes, the screens were put there for safety reasons, for protection from accidental falls and deliberate pushes or jumps. They were probably installed after a change in the building code prohibited open stairwells. Buildings were sometimes closed after codes required elevators and other mechanisms to increase accessibility because it was cheaper to close the building and move the people living or working in it than to make the required modifications.

Of all the hundreds of photos here (all amazing), this one really speaks to me. It doesn't look cramped. It says "refuge," a place to hide. The blue walls are the color of the ocean in the winter.

The faucet has an organic shape to it. It doesn't even seem to be manufactured.

If the person who cut that horrible hole in the mural calls himself a "preservationist," he should be hauled in for misappropriating a title. It would have been much better to carefully photograph the murals and leave them to the elements. That or take the whole murals down.

THE EXPLANATION IS SIMPLE...the kool-aid man got drunk off cherry kool aid and thought it would be a good idea to fight the guy he seen in the mirror...he knocked off the mirror and rammed into the wall and spilledl all his kool aid out!!
