It's an oscilloscope.

This thing is in such good condition it's weird. I'm sort of expecting to see a cassette deck on it somewhere.

I bet it would still work. They really made things back then. Stick the Batman logo onto the lens and have some fun!

The janitors are spending all their time working on that dang self-serve lobotomizer (so far, every model they've come up with has killed the patients who've used them). Because that's what they do every day, we have all these broken windows, loose floor tiles, falling ceilings, crumbling plaster, and just general mold and filth everywhere! :-)

It's not a self-serve lobotomy machine (we haven't quite perfected that one yet), but this IS the machine that sharpens the tools used for removing parts of patients' brains. The parts are then stored in those big brown bottles. :-)

Where I worked we kept records for at least 7 years after the case was closed. In practice it was much longer--if not forever--simply because there wasn't anyone to go through charts just to see which ones had been closed for the required length of time. As long as a case was active, we had to keep the entire record, although only the current volume and the one preceding it would be in the active records room. Others were stored in secure storage in the basement. For some of our long-term people, the record for just one person would fill two banker's boxes.

(Since diseases don't last very long at all and this was clearly abandoned a long time ago, I wouldn't worry about disease at all...except maybe tetanus from scraping oneself on a hinge :) And people usually don't just leave bodies around. However, I'd like to think that a vampire is in there, just the same...)

I absolutely love all of your work! I've recently visited a few places you've been to. This past wekend I went to Norwich and the security was absurd!! But it made it sooo much fun dodging them! We had to hide in a bush for a half hour while a guard paced back and forth across the road! I didn't get a lot of pictures because we were hididng but it was a blast!

It seems like Mandy and her brother and his friends have way too much time on their hands and not nearly enough supervision. At the very least they might want to reconsider using a public forum to disclose their felonious escapades to the world. It's a strange sense of humor that thinks it's funny to destroy someone else's property and to almost sustain a serious injury. They probably wouldn't believe how much fun it's possible to have without breaking, smashing, or trashing anything. (BTW Mandy, the police use the Internet too)

Just went down there for the first time. It's awesome. I also just finished a map of the Rochester Subway. It's a view of how it might have looked in 2008 if it were still around. I work at Pilgrim.There's no ghosts or gools,and more than half the stories that people tell you are just for kicks.My mother has worked there for 30 years and at Kings Park before it closed down.That may have seemed to appear scary to the eye because goth and emo junkies want to believe this and actually sleep in these filthy abandoned places places while trippin out and blazin up."GOT...LIFE"?The only scary thing about Pilgrim State Hospital is those god damn wild dogs that live in packs that have been feeding off the innocent barn animals every F#$%ING month.Yes a barn for patient therapy.Now these dogs will be shot on site thanks to a cheap state budget,and a bunch of fed up rec council taking the law into their own hands.

Whittingham was a magnificent place, so sad to see it go....the Photos are stunning...thankyou for helping me remember this place...

One of our patients smeared his poop on his face and even had a semi-beard. We're laughing and crying at the same time.
