Magnificent architecture. Boarded up windows are (to me) a building's obituary. Oh sure, they are put there to preserve the interior for future use. But more times than not, it's the death sentence.

You people are nuts. Asbestos is not some magical killer that attacks you out of the blue. It's completely harmless unless it's disturbed especially if you cut or file it since you then make dust. People who died of asbestosis usually WORKED with it. Passive asbestos is a pain if you have to renovate a build (since it's hard to work with) and also a GREAT excuse to condemn something.
But it is not a massive killer like it's made out to be. Still in abandoned places a dustmask is a good idea because of the bird droppings.

How do you find these places? Internet? Word of mouth? Have you ever gone to a facility only to discover it's not worth photographing?

OMG that is spectacular. I hope that before this building meets the wrecking ball, that someone can salvage this bannister. Better to see it in someones home or business than to have it destroyed.

This is not a place for amateurs. These old buildings can kill you DRT (dead right there).

I love this building so much I even go to meeting on the restoration of the building. I thing for sure is it massively huge

My nan's house is about a ten minute walk away from here, I don't know how many times I walked past here to go feed the ducks in the pond when I little.

It's a good job you got these photo's too, because it's all gone now, they've been knocking it down this year and last year. I think there's flats there now.

This artwork is located in Pennsylvania, and has no relation to Germany or the Nazi party as far as I know.

The eugenics movement in PA was only carried out at the Elwyn Institute, where 270 residents were sterilized. No sterilizations took place at Pennhurst, and I don't think U.S. eugenics at institutions were based on racism.

I think in order to understand the meaning of this piece of art you have to take into consideration the dictum of that day. This is exactly what a commenter stated previously “Social Darwinism/Eugenics.” During this time Social Darwinism/Eugenics was gaining a lot of momentum and was being institutionalized, example of this is exactly this old facility. Whoever was stigmatized as being feeble minded were institutionalize and sterilized. They also perform many horrible experimentations on them. Social Darwinism/Eugenics was the driving force of the Nazis, to “preserve the race” aka “Aryans” by one day reeding the world of all who they thought were imbeciles thus stopping retrogression. This placement of art is an indirect way of saying blacks were imbeciles which they believed. This was a way to show their pure disdain for the black race and all the “lesser races” for that matter. This is a sad reality of history.
