I don't know the dates when the various buildings were constructed, but this banister would be appropriate for 1907 or other early period in the life of the institution. The place wasn't built as a prison or torture chamber - it was a school; it would have had attractive (if impractical) features and details before (as dme noted above) the safety fencing was installed. Some of the architecture of other buildings looks like they had to be built in the 1930s and 1950s.

This entire gallery of images is just stunning - not only do the pictures capture history, but do so in an artistic way.
This is going to sound like a dumb question, but I don't know that much about masonry.... will the crack cause structural weakness, or would it be cosmetic only? Or possibly both? I guess it doesn't really matter unless they are going to use the building for something else... nice building, though. :)

i went there today didnt go in but very creepy from the outside why is there a smokestak in the back and that weird ad on that is a circle i felt like people were watching me and my friends i heard noises coming from inside and a guy yelling get out seriously very creepy i found papers outside that were from 1985 and you could read them it was saying how much medicine they gave the people creepy i heard homeless people lived in there now in the basement. there was wheelchairs outside and also gernies so weird there was grefiti everywhere and i heard people talking inside the building i couldnt hear what they were saying but it was coming from the old kicthen im going back at night this week wish me luck
