When I say damaged I mean they meant to inflict mental as well as physical damage. Inflicting brain damage that affected the speech center seems to have been a favorite kind of torture, at least it was with me.
Imagine being unable to communicate your thoughts. You can speak but no one ever seems to get from those words the ideas you are trying to convey and you cannot find the correct words to correct it. This is living hell. People have ideas about you that have nothing to do with the truth of who you are and your ability to speak is good enough they never believe you when you say "no I did not mean that I meant this..." being smart or clever only serves to make this worse. It is a soul destroying prison.

There were never any autopsies done on grounds. I really wish u had spoken with some of us employees before u jumped to your own twisted conclusions of Western I was a nurse there for 25 yrs. - much of this info is incorrect as far as the pic. notes. So sad that the truth was not told.

Thank you for the acknowledgemnt Larry D. I don't have an explanation for the time span between. I look at these pages now and then hoping to recall a name or something else more concrete than the memories of the torture and abuse. Mostly hoping some fellow victim finds this place and makes contact. I think that last few times I looked at this page I did not check for a new post.
The closest thing that describes the things that went on here has always been Mengele's torture of children. The only difference was intent of the abuse and desired outcome. These folks wanted damaged children still conscious enough to know what was happening as it was done and for them to know how and why they were damaged at the end of it. More recently I have come across a couple books, one by Michael D'Antonio, The great Boys Rebellion about a similar place in Massechusetts. And another book by Howard Dully called My Lobotomy about how his aunt had him lobotomized at age 12. The similarities from the eugenics to the specific threats and abuses used as well as accusations made (who the hell came up with the idea of smearing shit on walls?)makes me wonder of there isn't some cultural transmission of the knowledge and techniques abusers use via some weird national pervert organization.

Responding to the previous post (Chris). Percy Brown's--my grandfather used to get fresh Italian bread and clam chowder; I heard it was the best. The Westmoreland Club is still there. The only place on earth to get authentic "Old Forge" Style pizza; if you never heard of it, you don't know what your missing. Just imagine Italian & Polish immigrants making pizza. Little known fact is that Planter's Peanuts was founded in W-B. Luzerne, Economy, Shavertown, & Plains Lumber Co's. Most gone but had previously been around for eon's. The one good thing is that they managed to hold on to Pomeroy's & the Paramount Theater...I think. Well, I guess it could be worse, we could be talking about Detroit, MI or Camden, NJ

What a disgrace!!! My family is from there, visited a lot, I lived there for a number of years and moved out about 2001. This Hotel does a great job of representing what Wilkes-Barre USED to be. The Sterling is a masterpiece of art work that came on the heels of the Gilded Age before income tax and at a time when business & industry was booming; not like today...no matter what the media says. I mean when the US WAS special. The Sterling is done in the same vane as the Boston Park Plaza, The Plaza in NYC, Waldorf, and The Bellvue. To lose it, in my opinion is the LAST nail in the coffin for the Wyoming Valley. Ironically the valley, since the death of the coal industry, has become known as the place that enters a recession first & exits it last. Third largest economy in the state (distant third) and there's absolutely NO industry to speak of but then again that's not so unusual nowadays. Sorry for the negativity but it's like watching your Dad get beat up or Babe Ruth get out done by one of the steroid charged athletes of today. It's pitiful a block away from the Sterling the McDonald's couldn't even stay open.

I remember walking down these corridors every day. A nurse student there from 1993 -1996 hate that it is now just a wasted space being wrecked. Part of my history.

These are great pictures taken of the Sterling, and thank you so much for taking the risk to get them. My grandfather used to own the fur store that was inside the sterling and i used to go play in there as a kid all the time, its a shame what happened to that building. That buliding was truely a work of art, i will be sad to see it go

over the last 24 hours ive done a little research on pennhurst/willowbrook...they both seem like hell holes ESPECIALLY WILLOWBROOK..i couldnt imagine being strapped to a bed all day or sitting in fecies and sitting naked in a dark dayroom may GOD BLESS the people that sufferd at these places and the people that truly cared and helped and may you have mercy on the people's soul that took advantage of disabled and etc A REAL NIGHTMARE
