Any decent lens cloth sold at a camera store fixes the problem well. If smearing occurs, I use a lens cleaning fluid I keep on me, it has come in handy a few times in these dusty and dirty places.

Hmm, I think there were holes in the roof causing the metal of the film rewinder to rust so much, but I could be confused with another film projection room... the place was in pretty good shape overall, not much graffiti or random vandalism.
