It probably turned the bath water to ice cold too, while they were being electroshocked and lobotomized at the same time.

It's a three-in-one switch.

Thank you very much for all the PSH information, it's quite interesting!

It was a hospital for people with developmental disabilities, not a psychiatric hospital.

http://www.historicaerials.com has a few dates to choose from.

I visited the site earlier this year - one building was gutted and even had a few claw foot bathtubs sitting atop a dumpster outside; everything else was demolished or re-purposed, except the main building which remains half-used.

Thanks flushed; these particular photos are from the old buildings in back that were demolished in 2006. I managed to photograph the disused portion of the main building a few years ago, unfortunately it wasn't very interesting inside.

After WWII, the institution became a closed military zone and housed the central hospital for Soviet troops and politicians. Check out the history here: http://www.opacity.us/...litz_heilstatten.htm

There's usually a dank, musty, rotting wood odor inside the old buildings; newer facilities can be pretty odorless, or rank with a nasty mold / mildew smell depending on the humidity and ventilation inside. Attics are almost always a dusty-stuffy smell, and laced with a pigeon dropping stink depending on the temperature.

Hospitals often still have the scent of strong disinfectant I like to call a "hospital smell;" it's quite unpleasant but I think I've grown attached to it, for obvious reasons.
