I am not a number. I am a free man.
Looks similar to Easter Island.

Some believe that these numbers were used so that families would not have to bear the negative stigma of having a family member committed in an institution.

I agree Grace, while looking through this I was actually thinking the same thing. But then I realized maybe too many patients were dying and they didn't really have a lot of time to bother putting names on the gravestones.

Not like Harrisburg, they've got the patients cremated in what can only be described as old paint cans, lined in an office

yes a bed pan or metal restraints. Gone bet not forgoten.
It seems so sad that a life lived was not significant enough to have a name. Regardless of the place of death, if a name is known it should be remembered.

I have my doubts that it was fingernails. Those doors are pretty heavy looking.
Fingernails (I don't think) could make those marks.
The semi-circular shape is too consistant.
Side note: Since the marks are on the right side of the window and a majority of people are right handed it would seem that whoever did this was right handed

Maybe it's from people that were working there on shift work. The door is locked so whoever is inside with them cannot get out. When the person B comes in the morning to relieve them, the person A will let the police know that somebody is still in there. Just a thought.
On a slot machine, lucky. On a grave marker, NOT so lucky.
