I love this photography. Tell Carl that if he's not liking them, it's a free country and he can choose to close his eyes or move on. He's not impressing anybody here.
By the way, this old boat was a minesweeper, a tug, (YTB) or harbor sub net tender. not a subchaser or any other kind of escort. I doubt it had more than a single 20mm AA gun on it. at one time, then later had the steel added to protect the bow, probably after it went into civilian ownership. Thanlks for the wonderfull pics, and this very nicely done site. Wonderfully done.
I believe this was the Esso Brussels, which collided with another ship in 1973. They caught fire and the whole flaming mess drifted under the Verrazano Bridge. There are pictures online. This barge has been scrapped. Currently in this spot is the Sunset Queen, a fake paddleboat which sank in Sheepshead bay a few years ago.
You've got some good pictures here, and the comments are a wealth of information! I've been to the ship graveyard a few times, and have been researching a few of the ships. This one started life as the US Navy YOG 64. It was a fueiing ship which supported the occupation forces after WWII before providing support for nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll. After it was decontaminated, it was sold to a commercial shipping company on Staten Island. It was scrapped sometime in the 1980's.
What about a kayak launch? Is there anywhere to get close to the river? Friends wanting to take a peak were chased out of the huge junkyard blocking the view. They were probably not the first. Can you help me, native Staten Islanders? I visited your lovely Chinese Scholars Garden just yesterday.
anyone think of the tons of asbestos and heavy metals these are likely to contain . not to mention the pain, fuel oil and other misc. nasty actors. no one wants to take responsibility for them now and with limited liability there are limits on what could be charged agains these companies for cleam up. I say start a fund a scrap drive and take this resource back full cycle and clean up the enviroment. just think of the mess we are making in our oceams. the gulf oil spill is a wake up call that its not ok to spill make messes and abandone junk in our waters then hold EPA super fund accountable for having not adressed this
