What is the black thing in the corner down the stairs?

A rare gallery, like it a lot; clean and nothing left...n o t h i n g....is so strange! Just rooms. Not even a chair!

Ohh, I had an almost identical fireplace in the house I grew up in, in Brooklyn, NY, except that the checkerboard pattern on ours was different greens. Fond memories.
