This crib is called a "fire" crib. When individuals had to be moved in a hurry, staff would sometimes place several "small" children in cribs like this to safely move them out of harms way. These cribs were sturdy enough to handle the weight.
Reading through the personal accounts of Pennhurst on other websites, and the pictures on this website, I believe Pennhurst will never leave my mind. I hope when I am of an age to leave the UK I might go to see this place. Providing it hasn't been torn down.
I dont need to see inside it, as much as I would love to have a hand in finding out a certain few things about it (I know it has many, many secrets) , just seeing the very outside would be enough I believe.
I went there not too long ago with a group of people.
We found some slightly terrifying things. In a branch of the main building, it smelled like urine and the floor was dirt--there was lots of weird graffiti talking about a "phantom." In the hallway there was a missile--a real steel missle, about 14 feet long, as well as a crate full of old gas masks. I heard that some other people found a box of RPGs while we were there but I don't know. Definitely one of the weirdest places I've ever been. I'd like to go back sometime actually, though.
Thnak you dme, Pennhurst was a drop off point for unwanted children. There was a girl placed ther in the 1920's because she was orphaned and could only speak Russian.
I'd love to get some still shots of this place , Is there anyone to contact about viewing the buildings. I've always heard that certain areas are open to look around
My Aunt was in Pennhurst,. She had Down's Syndrome. My Grandmother died and there were several other children. It was 1934 and hmy Grandfather couldn't care for all of them, so she went to Pennhurst. I have pictures of her sitting in these creepy rooms. The rooms looked to be empty. She died there when she was 14. Where is pennhurst? tohrdlay@ptd.net
