All the St. Louis Public Schools have those iron signs
Cool, Thank you Vereda, for the fond memories, and what years did you walk this fine school?
This is the door in the basement on the girl's side that leads out of the building to the playground (the boys used the bathroom on the other side of the building's basement) go to the bathroom, eat lunch then go outside to play. The tiles are a really nice touch to the building.
I loved being able to attend school in my neighborhood and within walking distance. This was our playground doing recess it was fenced in and had (3) exit in & out of the yard. I could go forever with the stories and memories here at Carr Elementary school. I wish that they could have saved it.
Yes! those are the seats/desk that we had back in those days. The classroom would be set up by the group level. My seat was in the corner next to the exit door of the classroom. My special area. (LOL) Don't get me wrong I was a good child having a good time in school. (LOL) We had famous Black people hanging on the wall, green plants all around the room for decorations. We would be assigned to water the plants, wash or erase the blackboards, and even wash the erasers. All of this was fun for us. LOL
I can't express how beautiful the hallways were in this building. There two-floor levels the younger kids on the bottom 1st floor and the older kids upstairs on the 2nd floor. There were (3) set of staircases inside the building. One on each end of the hallway and the main staircase in the middle of the halls. All the bathrooms were in the basement, and the teachers had their bathrooms and lounge.
These windows are something added after I left the 5th grade because they weren't there doing my era at Carr School.
That's the entry to the coatroom behind the blackboards. It was also where our punishments were conducted. LOL Believe I know! LOL
Ah! The main staircase. It was something to see. The steps and landing had marble flooring with grey& white swirls. The banisters were awesome to slide down, but don't get caught. It seem as though the Principal was always at the bottom when I got there. LOL Off to the office again. LOL
The hallways were so beautiful with shining hardwood flooring. The floor stayed waxed by the janitors, walls were always clean, (no graffiti on them) Sometimes on special occasions, teachers would hang our artworks outside of the classroom on the walls, but always they were taken down and sent home. I told that I loved this school. LOL
When I attended this school that door wasn't there. We had doors that had 9 glass panes in them. The Principal would walk the halls and look in on the classrooms.
I remember the classrooms all had coat rooms where we hung our coats, hats stored our lunches and rain boots. Usually, the teacher's desk would be stationed near the coat rooms where the teachers could monitor the ins and outs of the activities in there. LOL
I can't really recognize this room. I'm thinking since it's in front of the stairs that's the Principal's office. While sitting in the office awaiting my punishment (I was a regular visitor to the office). LOL There hung a huge oil painting of Carr School when it first opened. I remember in the painting was cobbler stone streets and carriages pulled by horses, people strolling along the sidewalk dressed their Sunday's best. It made going to the office worth it just so I could see my favorite painting.
I attended Carr Elementary School from K-5th grade. I loved this school. I see so much hurt as I view your photos. When I attended this school it was so beautiful. In my heart I can still see its beauty.
