Yes indeed, it is a fire-eye. The user and the eye were kept safe by a stream of compressed air which was aimed at the lense which kept it cool..

Someone should send this pic to a duct tape producer - it would be a great idea for an ad!

This movie was just on HBO this afternoon, and I watched it to see if I could spot any familiar surroundings. Of course, there were a lot of scenes shot in what could have been an abandoned mental hospital, and I'm guessing the ones where he was in the future with the council of weird-asses is what was filmed at this location. Very cool.
Giant, man-eating monster Lamprey.
The belly of the beast.
Burp to go back down, Charlie!! The fizzy lifting drink is going to make us hit the fan!!!!
GIANT robotic praying-Mantis.
Hmmm...now I'm excited.....:-D

A good bit of sneaking around; sometimes you can just walk into these places, other times you have to climb fences and walls, evade security or police, and get creative finding ways in.

I only worry about asbestos exposure in confined spaces with friable material (usually tunnels), and use a mask with a P-100 rated particulate filter.

first off, the pics on this site are fantastic - the full scope too, both vintage and new. great overall balance, contrast, and creepy feel to them all. just out of curiousity though, what did have to do to get tours for these places? and how did you deal with asbestos issues?

@ N3KTYR, Those aren't nails. They're rivets or bolts. One can't drive nails into solid steel.
