There's something really sad and FINAL about walled-in, or otherwise permanently blocked-off fireplaces, windows, doorways, etc.....kind of like a back-of-the-mind narrator is saying, "People once used this spot in their everyday lives, and NEVER AGAIN will a person, light, or even AIR pass through. Past days are irretrievable." I always want to "unblock" things (especially windows and doors) just to see the exact, long-lost sunlight pattern would have been. I know, strange idea, but....
