it was laid on my birthday so I have to go now(;
My dad worked there for 37 years and has fond memories of this hospital. He got very emotional when I showed him pictures of inside the old building seen here after some mindless youths have desicrated it like that. Also, he never had any paranormal experiences.
My grandmother worked there as a nurse before going on to work at High Royds in Menston. She retired in 1955.
When I was a boy in Ryhope in the 70's a mates dad used work there and he used to let us in and showed us amongst other things the morgue, fridges and slab.
Your pictures bring back some memories.

I saw some photos of the buildings being torn down in 2011. I'm not sure what is left. Since they were a tightly connected complex I'd assume they leveled everything.

Yup its a stationary TENS unit (I had a stationary one with 6 outputs!!) I use a portable one that has four outputs (8 electrodes) in conjunction with Opiates to control chronic pain. TENS works by overstimulating the nerves in that specific area which overrides the sensation of pain. Mine can also be used for muscle stimulation too.

MadNic-are you Nicola that worked in the main hall early 1980's? If so, I used to work with you...

There was a full time diversional therapy worker in the pottery and patients would make a variety of items often using slip clay and moulds. I used to be placed here when the main worker was absent and loved being there. You're right that the patients didn't use the kin themselves but to be fair many of them were more than capable of doing so, particularly the day patients that came here. The lad that worked here did the mural work on the pottery wall and probably a lot more after I left. I also did some mural work here and in the pool area in the early 1980's but that will be long gone!
