Patients stricken with TB had to remain isolated within the hospital complex for months or even years to prevent spreading the disease, creating a kind of institutional lifestyle. Entertainment was an important way to relieve these stresses of being "cooped-up" too long, so movies, plays, music, and games were circulated well throughout the hospital (remember too that television was still in infancy when these buildings were constructed).

The same thinking applies to the old psychiatric hospitals, although focus might lean more on the therapeutic values of entertainment.

The strains become drug resistant when patients who are being treated don't take their meds properly, skipping doses and not keeping a constant level of the meds at all times. You are on treatment for 6 months when you take isoniazid. If you miss a day or two the infection can begin to return and then when you start taking them again it's a tougher strain because it's changing to learn to live even with low does of meds in your system. Did a lot of research on this when my husband had to take isoniazid before he could start an injectable treatment for his RA.

I want this sink!! This lady was selling one just like this from her yard for like $50 or more. I've seen these types of sinks in many old hospitals. Did you try to pick it up Motts?
Why would a state hospital have a theater?
I'd like to think the white is peeling away to reveal the pretty blue color. A wonderful photo, Mr. Motts. Your site made me ask my mom about the days when she worked in a sanitarium. She didn't have too many freaky stories, though. :(
