The slots in the ceiling were to let the smoke out from the steam engine days. That way the area would not fill with smoke

Chris, you are very right. My grandpa who worked here in the 50's said when New York Central Railroad owned it they took care of the place which includes roofs, parking lots, and many more.
Then when Penn Central bought it, it went all down hill from there. They tore down some buildings like the Powerplant,Ice House, and the Couch Shop just because the taxes were to high. They stopped reparing the roofs and not repaving the parking lots. All the engines that had the NYC logo on it were scraped off and put on a Penn Central Logo.

Hey Motts it is Ozzy again. If you ever go to Buffalo again and you go to the Buffalo Central Terminal again I want to show you some very cool places. Places like underground tunnels, passenger platforms (currently detached from the main building), and the Baggage Check Building. I know my place around. And I promise you that you would get rockin pictures.
Please Respond.
Thank You.

I think I'd credit the Penn Central more than anyone else for letting this building go.

These passageways were once the old they old parking center for the NYC workers at one point. Since there was a down fall in workers at the Buffalo Central Terminal they put these luggage carts down here because there were very few passengers coming to the terminal betwwen the late 1960's and until it closed in 1979 so they let these carts rott.

This is the old Railway Express Agency were they shipped heavy cargo city to city.
I'm the treasurer of the CTRC and we are a non-profit group who owns the building and maintains it. We are going to be celebrating our 10th anniversary next year. We run events monthly during the late spring to early fall. Check www.buffalocentralterminal.org for details.

PS - It was designed by Alfred Fellheimer (co-architect of Grand Central) and Steward Wagner.

This picture was taken in the Railway Express Building on the Central Terminal grounds. This place is in very bad shape. The reason it is in bad shape because it has been all open with no fencing or anything. If you were to go here now it is shocking to see what man and nature can do to wonderful structures like this building. If you go on the second story of the REA Building you would be very if you didn't fall threw because the floors are rotton because of termites and nature.

8 ouncers were recycled for a long time. One of my first jobs was at a recycling counter in a supermarket (just outside of buffalo). Though I have no idea when it might have first been made, those bottles were commonly in circulation in the 80s.

We just got alot of artifacts back that belonged to the Terminal. A drinking fountain, brass door knobs, and many different signs. Hope to find more artifacts. If you have any send it to the Buffalo Central Terminal. We would love to see lots of artifacts returned to our beloved Terminal.
