There is a similar engine in the Grand Rapids (MI) Public Museum - they were used in manufacturing back in the day to run the overhead cams and belts. It certainly would be worth it to preserve this.

Anyway, on to my point, there seems to be quite a few similarities in the pattern of this staircase and the pattern on the wall in the Scratches photo from the Mental Floss gallery. Wherever this staircase leads it seems to have made a rather large impact on one of it's users. The way out, the way home perhaps? Or could it be a darker reason?
