There probably was a board, and the last crew of painters just painted around it... the color matches the paint under the blue coat.

Yes - a favorite - those handrails, awesome, for a kid: FUN! Dreamt about - cool!
There is only one lamp - far in, i think - so when no day-light, must have been a black dark narrow hallway.

Why the tan square on the right wall, right at the beginning of the photo? I thought it was some sort of board for hanging posters or something, but I see that there is peeling paint in the middle.
