I was the Director of Activities and MC in the nite club from '84-86. Hank Leeds, the legendary previous director disappeared Labor Day '84 and I took over. Anyway, I was given two attached rooms on the main floor in the Ritz. Each pair of rooms shared a bathroom in between (that's the way it was in the old days) ... so I had a 'suite' of sorts. One time I was taking a shower. I'm totally lathered up and someone starts banging on my tub from below with a pipe or something and I hear screaming from the basement. Scared the crap out of me. Turns out the hotel's handyman was fixing a leak and had undone the pipes coming out of my shower. The water was going all over the place. Just another day at The Pines And don't get me going on when the old guy backed his car thru the walkway leading to the Carlton...
Does anyone know the names of each building? I was recently at Glenn Dale and I passed teh childerens ward and onto the next building which seemed to be a housing area. it had a garage on the bottom floor. that was the only building i entered andi wish to retunr to see more. Im not asking on how to get in without the cops seeing me. i just want to know what buildings are what.
Oh and i a had walked towards the smoke stack and then decided to turn around and come back another time when on the way back i was next to the childerens ward and i heard what sounded liek a woman screaming coming from the adult ward which is on the other side of the property. the sound was really faint at first then became louder and closer. but as it got closer it started to sound like animals fighting. so im not sure if it was an animal or and actual huanting noise. but that is the only occourance i came across but i will return next weekend and see what happens.
Kim, actually, the hospital i've been to about 3 times ( Georgia Regional) was all kinds of blue, and the last time i was committed was less than a year ago.
Well said Seraph.; real Art, the kind that pushes the buttons of our humanity. I don't think there's any other way of pushing those buttons, not a planned way, and they need to be pushed. Like exercise in a gym. All the rest is just machinery to keep us going.
After being in this field since the day the Ark landed on Mount Ararat (or shortly thereafter, most would agree), I think I can safely say that there are few physical/developmental/psychiatric disabilities with which I haven't had some experience or exposure. "Disfigurements" are just part of the external side of a human being. The person is still a human being on the inside. There is nothing inherently scary about looking different, and it hurts people who look different than what most other people look like when they are responded to in such a manner.
The same with psychiatric issues. Having a psychiatric illness doesn't make you contagious or make you change others by your mere presence or look. People don't catch "insanity" by being near others who have psychiatric problems. People who get frightened by looking at those who are different already had their own problems in the first place.
The cruelest and loneliest part of a disability isn't the disability itself - it's how others react to you with their prejudices, fears, and misconceptions. I have worked with people who have had extremely severe craniofacial "abnormalities", and they were some of the gentlest and most loving people with whom I have ever had the pleasure of working.
Many years ago people used to believe that birth defects were caused by the mother looking at something frightening while she was pregnant. I guess I had hoped we had moved beyond that sort of superstitious thinking by now. People with psychiatric illnesses and intellectual disabilities often have enough of their own problems without having to be blamed for causing emotional illness in others.
Just... stunningly beautiful and evocative. Thanks for sharing all this. Reminds me a bit of the fourth floor of the Queen's Hotel in Portsmouth, UK. Hotel is still operating, but fourth floor (used to be live-in housekeeping quarters) has been condemned.
