I remember those days. I used to go there as a child with my parent s and my cousins. We used to have such fun. I have so many memories of that place. My cousin and I used to talk about taking our kids there someday. It is truly a shame that it had to come to this. Really breaks my heart. I knew it closed down years ago, but never knew it was still up !!! Wow.

Oh please give me a freakin' break. I want to scream every time I read one of these posts about an alledged former employee who believed all it took was love and understanding to make an institution a better place. It was and always will be MONEY. Do you understand that to take a client outside to play in the snow could be a disaster waiting to happen. And for the most part there was never enough staff to do that anyway. The tunnels were there for a reason one being that in bad weather there was no need to go outside. I don't see where that is so horrible. And one last thing, I went to work there for the paycheck ( they payed pretty good at the time) and I didn't abuse anyone. I'm sure a majority of the people working in group homes are also working for their paychecks. Get real!

I'm from taunton and there is a ton of stories and rumors about this tunnel system from what i under stand they lead right to downtown i've never explored them myself but i heard some pretty creepy stories i came here hoping to get more info

Creepy for me too. I was 8 years old on June 11, 1979 which is one of the few very clear days left showing on the calendar.

The Majority of Pennhurst is still abandon. They turned the main part of the hospital into the VA hospital years ago. In fact I believe they did it shortly after Pennhurst closing but long before 2006.

I was just recently to Pennhurst and it is still empty. The halls are filled with the history of the torture that happened in this place.

Roland Johnson wrote his first hand experience of the terror he faced as a young boy. Read it, it will bring new respect to Pennhurst and relief we were never a patient. Google Roland Johnson and the article will come up. After Pennhurst he went on to become a Speaker of Special Needs and Disabled peoples. He is a great man and brought a postive turn around out of such a horrible experience.

I know some of these comments are very old but the police patrol the ground so you dont get hurt. The buildings have espestos in them. Several of the buildings are beginning to fall down also. So be careful in Pennhurst land and keep a keen ear.

I think the posters are a great idea! Antique shops are full of old 6 pane double-hung windows that would make fantastic frames.
