Rachel: This is a stator for either a motor or a generator. The rotor has been removed, presumably for scrap. In alternating current systems, both drive motors and generators appear the same, but for a motor, electricity through the stator creates rapidly alternating magnetic fields, causing the rotor to turn. In generators, an external source, usually steam-driven turbines, spin the rotor, causing that rapidly changing magnetic polarity that results in electric current.
